Even with all the fond memories I have of each game, the lowest point of the series will forever be the first two games. Now inb4 newfag, I love each and every game, but the originals pale in comparison to the newer games in all fronts. In fact, each game is the high point, because each new game is better than the last, and I think that X and Y will trump anything we've seen. I still have much love for each game tho.

This is why I don't want to go back and play them. I too have amazing memories but I feel if I go back and play them again I'll see how bad and broke they were.

I will always remember how fucking broken Psychic Pokemon were. What the fuck was GameFreaks thinking. Bugs were shit and had no bug attacks and the only ghost was weak to psychic. And I remember watching the show and thinking WHAT THE FUCK. HOW IS HAUNTER DOING THIS.

I've liked every generation more than the last for the most part.

I suppose the ones that really stood out for the most part for me were the Heart Gold Soul Silver remakes and Hoenn; most of my favorite pokemon were introduced this gen.

Been playing since Gen 1 here, fucking a billion years old myself.
I used to think Gen 2 was the peak of Pokemon, and that opinion persisted until HG/SS came out. Now, though, I really think Gen 5 is the height. I have to confess, though, I really miss gen 3 and earlier, when the games didn't have so many fucking screens all over the place, and you could play them on a real television.
Low point is hard to say; I don't think there really was one. I guess Diamond/Pearl were the weakest in my opinion, but only by virtue of everything else being better. I loved Diamond/Pearl.

Low point would definitely be DPPt. Slow games in a boring region filled with inane characters and a mindless plot. I would probably have abandoned the franchise there if the next game announced hadn't been the GSC remakes.

But then 5th gen turned out to be everything I'd expected from 4th gen and never got and felt a worthy successor to GSC, something which 3rd gen (though good) wasn't. So now I am very hyped for XY. Pokémon is out of the post-Johto rut at last!

Started with Blue myself. Would have gotten it Christmas day the year it came out stateside, so I'm guessing '98? Can't really look up the release date at the moment.

High point For me, personally was Gen 2. Everything from Gen 1, but expanded, lots of new features, stuff to do, Day Night cycle, lotta new Pokeballs, shines, That Stat Split, the new Types, it was fantastic.

Low point for me? It isn't going to be a popular opinion, but I was completely disappointed with Gen 3, right when it came out. Everything they introduced in Gen 2 was gone, couldn't go back to the old regions, couldn't transfer my team up that had been through all my adventures
That being said, these days I can go back to Gen 3 and I'm more okay with it. It added some stuff of it's own, and double battles were always fun. Abilities had a huge impact on everything, I'm really thankful for them now, just, as a kid back then, it was the dumbest downgrade

Well yeah. You have to judge each gen by the standards of the time and what came before.

RSE for instance are great games. They have aged spectacularly well. But compared to GSC they were quite a let down. Even if GSC has aged far less well since then.

GameFreak has absolutely no clue on how to create a balanced game system. As cool as Dark and Steel were in Gen 2, combating Psychic would have been as easy as adding good Ghost and Bug attacks AND by not making the ONLY Ghost Pokemon weak to Psychic.

Low point as far as mainstream popularity goes: RSE onward, up to X/Y which are getting a lot of attention.

Low point as far as game quality goes: RBY, lets be honest.

It looks like X/Y will mark a new high point in both game quality and mainstream attention. Pokémon will never be as popular as it was in the 90's tho.

I honestly lost interest in Pokemon at third gen as a child, so I would call that the low point, because even though third gen added a lot, with the huge time gap and lack of marketing and advertising that the game mechanics had improved made me lost interest, because I was a teenager, I guess 13 or so when third gen came out, and I was more interested in more complex games, video, board and card,m etc. While third gen would have been right up my alley I didn't really realise how much better it had gotten. So I would call that a low point.
Fifth gen felt like a huge reboot to the series, so popular, great new set of pokemon, reasonable size of a dex for people new to the franchise. It was beautiful, brought a new graphical look, and set us up for gen 6, which also looks beautiful and innovative. On top of that, gen 5 fine-tuned the battle system so well, and had the entire pokedex available to its players. This really made it feel like the strongest point in the series so far.

Gen 6 is the highpoint for me, the jump to 3D is exciting. Gen 1 was the worst, most boring, most broken in the series. also has the worst designs all so boring. Pokemon gets better with each gen.

Been playing since RBY and have played every gen to date.
Honestly, I love how each Gen improves on things as the years go by. I don't really hate any gen because they all bring something new.

Gen II Brought held items and breeding
Gen III brought abilities and weather
Gen IV did my favorite thing to date and split special and physical attacks.

I guess Gen V was my low point because it didn't really bring anything new for me in terms of game play. But I love pokemon and I'm really excited for XY

The game with the most emotional valence for me was Pokemon Silver. Blue was fun, but Silver was really awesome for me. I loved the legendaries, I loved the mystical/magical feel of the world, I loved that I could go back to Kanto with a team of new pokemon.

Objectively, though, each game is better than the last. BW is the best so far, and XY will be even better.

I completely agree, but with gold instead of silver because that's what I chose. People hated Johto and Kanto for some reason, but I loved the fact I could enjoy a new region then go to Kanto and face 8 more leaders. THEN you face the character you made in Red/Blue. Your rival was fun to fight, he drew emotions in me. I felt that I had to beat him because he was a complete dick.

And gen 2 pokemon are the shit.

High point: Gen 4-DPP have aged badly, but at the time, they were amazing just for stuff like the GTS alone and it felt a lot more welcoming to long term fans than R/S when they first came out.. HG/SS are high watermarks of the franchise, and in terms of presentation, probably the high point of the main series. It's only fault is being way too faithful to the original and not improving the flaws.

Low point: R/S/E-like a lot of people I moved on from the games when these games came out. The lack of Kanto/Johnto pokemon hen R/S first came out set me back, and I didn't like the new pokemon I felt were stealing the spotlight. I came back on for Fire Red and then emerald, but I preferred Fire Red a lot.

As far as how I consider them as games
High point: R/S/E-Maybe it's just because I've been replaying it this week, but it's very refreshing and exciting just to explore. It's got a nice balance of all types of pokemon, and an adequate difficulty level. only issue is having to have an HM slave to explore.

Low point: Gen II- RBY may be deeply flawed, but it's such a different animal I can still enjoy it independently from the other games. Replaying gen II is just a chore.

This is just about right. I'd like to say Red/Blue trumped Silver/Gold but the improved features and added types suggests otherwise.

As the series continues to grow and evolve, it just keeps getting better and better. X and Y will be the greatest games in pokemon History and I suspect the sequels will surpass them and Gen 7 will surpass Gen 6.

Still Red and Blue will always be fond memories and I'm just glad the series continues to thrive and improve itself.

I think the momentum for the series was probably best around Gen 2. I remember being a kid and looking up all the Japanese pokemon names thinking that was their actual new names. But you could tell that the anticipation of G/S releasing was when Pokemania was in full swing.

I believe the lowest point was D/P. Most boring starters, I remember that's the point I was like "Are these games fun any more?"

The one thing I always wanted out of the series was a fully 3D environment and models from the get-go, and it looks like that's what we're getting. It really looks like the series is gonna have a lot of new life in it with this one so I am optimistic for the future of Pokemon.

For me the high point has been B2/W2. Really diverse pokedex and neat world. Dunno how to feel about X/Y yet. Not really a fan of the fairy type but we'll see how it plays out.

Kind of a weird opinion, but I think the series has gotten better with every single installment. It started getting awesome with the 3rd gen (Features and such), 4th was awesome, 5th is amazing. I can only hope they didn't have to dumb down anything for X&Y.

Gen IV was the high point because it actually made just about every Pokémon viable with the Physical/Special split. The fact that Ghost was a Physical type up until Gen IV was a real putoff for me. It also showed GameFreak was conscious enough to utilize the touch screen in the best way they could, but HG/SS was by far the best way to do it. Now, Gen IV may have been the high point but Sinnoh is my least favorite region.

Low point? Gen III. Again, going by overall experience and additions. So far Gen III's contribution to the series TECHNICALLY makes or breaks battles for some players -- Abilities and visible Natures, so I might be using "low point" a bit harshly. Double Battles were seen as a gimmick despite the layer of strategy that could be put to use for it and GameFreak had a bit of fun introducing minigames other than the Slots. To put it mildly, Gen III didn't have much in the innovation department it felt more like a testing ground for GameFreak to craft a Pokémon game with a bit more detail since they had access to hardware with less limitations than the GB/GBC.

I'm looking forward to X/Y because it'll be GameFreak's first full 3D (graphically) main series Pokémon game, so I'm hoping they leave me with a great impression on that. Plus I may actually try Pokémon-Amie if it has an effect on Vs. Battles. I'll just have to try to attend more conventions so I can get some O Power though...

I think the high point for me was Gold/Silver.
They were so convincing in setting this calm, almost melancholic mood for the region, and the return to Kanto in particular, that I honestly thought that those were the last games they would make.

Then Ruby/Sapphire came out, and I was like 'fuck yeah, there's more!'

Lowest point would have to be Diamond/Pearl.
Too many legendaries, with only the thinnest of plots explaining them, almost no advertising or hype that I can recall, and I just couldn't get into the region at all.

I'm not sure. I have fond memories of each gen in some way, and even though the earliest games probably make me feel the most nostalgic looking back on them, at the same time I think Black and White 2 iare my favorite games and that the series as a whole improves each generation (not in every way, but overall, it gets better).

I'm at a hype factor at about 8/10 for X and Y, 9/10 if we can transfer over our Pokemon from gen 5. Can't wait.

Low point was Gold/Silver. Grade-schoolers were just hitting that backlash phase where pokenerds would be teased. Games themselves were not very fun. Horrible boxing system, numerous nuisance "features"- the phone, day/night/weekly cycles that mandated when and how much you could do certain things, terribly underleveled E4 when grinding to 100 was needed for metagame, lot of unsatisfying new pokemon, overuse of old pokemon, especially early on, slow, slow combat- I realized I just really disliked 2nd gen.

High point was gen 3. Finally had real color, a real workable box system for the PC, the metagame was the best it's ever gotten, Hoenn was a joy to explore (seamless region! hoping Kalos brings this back!), combat is fast paced, pokemon variety was phenomenal, secret bases.

Since then, slight drop to rolling hills. Every game, even my beloved Ruby, has its issues and its high points. For the future, I'd rather they try to come together to bring us the complete package, a really solid game with no faults; not very optimistic, though, the eternal trend is for "bigger and better" where they try for greatness and it comes off as gimmicky (e.g. Dream World).

This is so hard to define. In terms of popularity, cultural relevance? It's never going to catch back up to where it was in gen 1. Gen 1 was the Harry Potter of video games - everyone played it. And that was when all the merchandise was HUGE. Everyone had Pokemon toys, Pokemon cards, watched the show, saw the first movie and maybe a couple after, all sorts of random spinoff merchandise.
My personal favorite games are probably FR/LG, because I still think the originals are the purest representation of what makes Pokemon great, but with updated mechanics and such. A lot of it is also that I think the 3rd gen engine/graphics/whatever is the most appealing of all. I've never fallen in love with the pseudo-3D look of the DS games as much as the colorful 2D world of the Advance games. I could understand any of the gens being someone's favorite though.

Diamond and Pearl without a doubt. 2 and 4 are my least favorite generations, in large part because you don't really feel the impact of the new Pokemon. Gen 2 is better for me though, because it was a more experimental and did more to shake up the franchise. Gen 4 added very little other than the physical/special split.
Diamond and Pearl, for me, exemplified all my least favorite things about the series. Lack of choice and variety with ingame Pokemon selection, too many HM's, and an unmemorable region all combined to leave me feeling pretty underwhelmed. After the lush variety of environments in gen 3, Sinnoh was dull. Snowpoint City was fantastic though, the journey to it was easily the highlight of the games. I do think the series has rebounded a lot since D/P.

Mixed feelings. I don't have a 3DS yet and I'm still waiting to see whether it will be worth it. I only play Pokemon about once a year now, but I've never stopped keeping up with the series and I don't know if I want to.
