Salamence and Flygon had their names switched in translation.

Flygon has more of a smooth 'salamander-like' look to it and the Bagon, Shelgon, Flygon name transitions make much better sense.

I do think Butterfree and Venonat were meant to be related by evolution in the early stages, but partway through someone went, "That's no good, make a better evolution for it".

So, Venomoth, etc.

I've actually heard that the Butterfree Venomoth switch actually happened because control groups for the anime thought that Ash having a creepy looking Pokemon like Venomoth, which was then Caterpie's final stage and had a different name, would be a bit odd for such a happy go lucky protag or some such nonsense.

Also, Venomoth's Jap name is Morphon, relating to a genus of butterfly (or something).

The only other allude to it being a moth is the fact it's a "Poison Moth" Pokemon, but are species name the same in Japanese?

Not that it being a butterfly is concrete evidence anyway, because Venonat is a gnat.
