Seriously though, when I was younger, I used to do the whole "use my starter in every fight so he gets ridiculously over-leveled, then rely on him for most of the game" thing, but when I got older, I realized the game is a million times better when you play it the right way. Catch Pokemon of different types and use them as conditions dictate. If you find something is getting under-used, maybe consider switching it for something else your team needs. That being said, I usually don't have a complete team assembled until the 3rd or sometimes 4th gym, but I never have to grind. If you're grinding, you're doing it wrong. Part of the thrill of the game is taking down gym leaders who's Pokemon out-level yours, but you win by fighting smarter.
The game should really enforce this kind of gameplay. By having a team consisting of one or two powerful Pokemon and HM slaves, it really negates one of the best things Pokemon games have to offer. Actually, I can't believe it even has to be spelled out like this. You people should turn in your trainer cards.
