That makes two of us. I guess it's because the PMD series seems to be able to balance the dark and the light stuff fairly well for the darker stuff to have real impact. Spec Ops: The Line was just gargling non-subtle dark after the first hour and the supposed 4th wall tampering at the end was laughable.

And even when it comes to the story, Gates was the first pokemon story ever to actually be fairly good instead of just good by pokemon standards like Explorers was (Adding in the special episodes of Sky was a big improvement)

Most bosses are just gangs of Pokemon that outnumber you and will kill you with ease if you don't abuse orbs. It's just the major legends that are insane like that.

Start with Gates
It has the best overall gameplay, is the easiest (by a small margin) and isn't as suppressant with text
If you like it enough, play EoS
Avoid the already evasive WiiWare games
