When the hype train ended, everything just went... wrong. I think Boogie, his porn of Meloetta, and the icing story were the beginning of the end. Are u single master, gots yer feets, the antics of Bui(now a blacklisted name) And Friends, the Mel army(using this name results in a one day ban), Germanfag/Kyo shitposting, horsefuckers everywhere, "roll a Pokemon and write smut about it" threads, etc. ran rampant from this point. Moderation was non-existent, and the furfags tended to justify their behavior by claiming the then-written rules only meant anthro porn was banned outside of /b/. In the end, many people began advocating for the board's deletion and IIRC towards the end moot came to personally ask us what direction things need to go in. The end result was a massive crackdown. IIRC this time in general changed much beyond /vp/ too. The generals clogging up /v/ were sent to the new /vg/, horsefuckers were banned from all boards but the new /mlp, /r9k/ came back, and old /n//new/ was resurrected as /pol/.
As for the second golden age, probably never. The events that caused it can't be replicated. I'd say we're in a silver age right now.
