It's most likely mostly audio files. Like any game these days. Models, textures, sprites, ect are nothing compared to the space audio takes up.

Pokemon can get away with less details on things. MH3 has a really gritty, detail oriented artstyle. The models are a hell of a lot more detailed and had a ton of animations each, much more than any one Pokemon will have. The armors, weapons, and maps landscapes were all also incredibly detailed.

Maybe it is just Pokemon models taking up a shit ton of space, but it doesn't seem like they should take up THAT much.

Ocarina of Time was originally a 32MB game, which is more along the lines of a NDS game really. 3DS remake size is on account of extra polys, textures and shit.

I'm glad the game is making use of the 3DS cart space, considering how much they were able to make use of on DS and all. All those textures, sounds/cries, model data, attack effects, music/soundfonts/voices and the like.

If you ask me, I expected about half that much.

I don't think they do, in fact, its probably taking up a hell of a lot less space due to the art-style they chose to go with.
So, overall, they'll probably consist of, say, .3~.4GB?
Plus the whole "overworld" and things therein (everything in it) is cartoony, cell-shaded, overall easy-on-the-render graphics that they can probably fit WAY more in than they can with the graphical demands MH3U commands.

The original is like 64MB without trimming. That 1.7 on XY is with trimming. DPPt, HGSS, BW1, and BW2 were all larger than the original Ocarina of Time.

As said by others before: The largest space eaters in modern gaming is audio files and FMV's. Literally over half of Zelda Wind Waker's taken disc space is the ending cutscene, which is one huge FMV. The majority of Metal Gear Solid 4 is just high quality audio. Game Freak's just taking advantage of the extra space for higher quality music and such.

Suppose every single Pokemon is in the game, including legendaries
It's going to be over 700 species in the game, at least 650 are going to be around multiple times
It would take up a lot of area just to have enough space for all of them. So I imagine the map is a lot bigger than just the roads
Then we got multiple battle animations for each one, multiple Pokemon-amie animations, horde battles with multiple Pokemon

It's gonna be a big game.

Those cutscenes with Sycamore and the Flare Grunts look like they'll have VAs too. Every main series 3D Pokemon game has had VAs (Yes I accept Colosseum, Stafium, and BR as main series)

Not to keen with the voice acting thing. Nintendo (I know GF isn't Nintendo, but Pokemon is on Nintendo consoles only so it counts) tried voice acting in a series that didn't need it already, and the end result was horrifying.

If GF DID put in full voice acting into X and Y, what Male and Female English-speaking Voice Actors would you want them to hire?

I don't know about the male, but Tara Strong I think is the obvious choice for the female.

I think you're mistaken.

ROM sizes don't have the maximum cartridge size off-hand. The 8GB is the theoretical maximum, but the 1GB, 2GB and 4GB ROM sizes are readily available. GameFreak is likely using a 2GB ROM cart with 0.3GB of padding/dummy data.

Reason it's so much space is because the region (which is fairly large) is entirely in 3D. You add onto this, all the sound effects in the game (battle cries, attack sounds etc) on top of over 700 Pokemon models alone + substantial number of animations for each model (dont forget Amie) and you begin to realise why it's so much data.

Sorry to burst the bubble but don't fool yourselves into thinking there's going to be a huge amount of content compared to previous games. It's still the same single-region single-player story with 8 gyms, a league, and a small amount of post-game content rolled in with some extra features nobody will use.

I'm not. I listed the reasons why the games were lacking already, regardless of my enjoyment of them. I didnt dislike them, but I understand why they died.

They were a good experiment, but a failed one. If they make a home console Pokemon, I really hope GS isnt involved (and they wont, because Nintendo knows they were mediocre titles).

The GC games were mediocre. XD, the better of the two, has a 64% on metacritic. For a Pokémon game, thats lackluster.

I enjoyed them when they came out, but I can see past my fanboyism and nostalgia googles to objectively say, even though I had fun with it, I can see why they'd never make that mess of a game ever again.

I just thought of a possibility. Perhaps X and Y are different games, as in not just a few exclusives here and there, I mean heavily dramatic differences. As far as games and the show go, it usually takes about 4 years to get to the next gen, this time it didn't even take 3. The reason of the large game size is due to Miku's cameo appearance who introduces the player to a DDR-like mini-game called Pokeloid Academy with licanced music.

we're about 2 months away from release. typical developing schedules would have XY in the debug and polish stage, where nothing substantial will be added from this time on. It's basically complete by now. all games are 100% complete a month before release. this is known to be the point in time wheb they 'go gold'

You can have realistic sounding instruments using MIDI. There's a little thing called a "soundfont."

i just played rune factory 3 some days ago. and the voices were all shit. and I mean, holy shit they were bad. you want to strangle every loli you see in that game every time they open their mouths.
