I'm expecting the PSS avatar to be more customizable than the in-game one. I wouldn't be surprised if you were able to edit it so it can look like past gens characters.

What are you on about?
The icon is that of your character in game.
If you take off his hat,
His hat is removed from the icon.
If you change his hair,
His hair is changed in the icon.
There's literally NO reason to need 2 separate methods of customization.

The fact that they're bringing back Lasses says something. They only use generic NPCs when they need a way for a player to difference themselves from another, like in Union Room.

So maybe you can customize your icon for online use, but not your in-game model.

It's already confirmed that we'll have customization for the overworld model. Whether or not it's the same as the avatar is unknown.

My guess is that your 3d model will be way more limited in terms of customization than the online avatar, like recoloring and maybe some hats, glasses and whatnot. Maybe you could take it off.

As for your online icon, the game could provide you with some models that look like past gens characters.
