Why does it seem the majority of people here hate Charizard? I can understand disliking his typing but hate? What has it ever done to deserve hate? It's not even overpowered or broken.

It's the exact opposite of overpowered or broken. It's terrible. It's best set relies on sun being up and a move that has 85% accuracy. and obviously it's terrible typing and extreme weakness to hazards isn't working in it's favor.

but I think the funniest thing about charizard is that I used to worship it when i was younger and only as I grew older did i start to realize just how terrible it is and how hilarious it is that I ever even thought it was good

It's a two-fold thing.For one, it's retaliation against casuals who bitch and moan about newer gens, who like Charizard because it's a design that appeals to the LCD. It's an angry looking dragon that looks tough. It doesn't feel too cutesy or too overdesigned or whatever. No one as their masculinity threatened using it.

Second, because this whole board revolves around the games first and foremost, and a Pokémon's worth in game.Which, kind of sucks, because you have constant threads bitching about Pokémon because they can't use them in their metagame team. Which kinda sucks, because no one seems to enjoy Pokémon for their designs alone.

anything kicks ass in-game. in-game has the difficulty level of battling someone on Pokemon Showdown who has their hands tied behind their back and a blindfold covering their eyes. and all they know about pokemon is what type beats which.

and challenge mode is the equivalent to them having the blindfold removed

No, that's not true. Sure, you can beat the game with even Ledian or Rattata, but not everything is reliable and doesn't require tons of support or over-grinding. Charizard is one of those pokemon who doesn't require much effort to wreck shit.

I'm not really a Charizard fan but it's a cool pokemon, I have fond memories of it and I actually like using it in OU (belly drum salac berry fire punch/thunder punch/EQ catches people off guard)

I don't dislike charizard, fuck, I don't dislike any pokémon yet, but I find the people that worship him to be the most annoying part of the fandom. Yeah he was the "cool fire dragon", but defending him like the god of pokemon is stupid when it's not that good in comparison to others, but you ca't say that because they're blinded by nostalgia. I've meet people that hack just so they can start every gen with the same team, wich always includes a charizard.

In /vp/, if you had to ask what pokémon represents genwunners (note: a genwunner is not a fan of gen1, is someone who only played gen1) it would be charizard

Truth is, people picking Charmander in Gen I had tough time in the beginning of the game.

Considering the first 2 Gyms are not very fire-type friendly.

Bulbasaur and Squirtle were always safer choices.

I picked Charmanderas my starter back in /1998/, but only because I wanted it to match the cartridge.

About the obesity of gen I starters, I don't recall gen I Charizard being so fat, think the artwork got fatter after gen III.
