I've played gold, part of heartgold, and gen V. There is no reason to play heartgold when you can perfectly well play the original gold, but gen 5 has a good storyline (and recovers from the shitty gen 4 pokemon line)

Aside from the gen IV/V connectivity, the physical special splits, natures, abilities, improved movesets, higher selection of Pokemon and legendaries, improved storyline, improved graphics and music, improved interface and improved running Pokemon mechanics, it's really not worth it.

Yeah I'd rather not be forced to accept gifted pokemon that are super effective against my opponents starter and I'd rather not have my starter conveniently learn moves that are supper effective against the next when he hits a similar level. Big surprise, finding my own way to overcome challenges is more fun than being treated like a drooling moron who needs to be told what to do every step of the way. That doesn't necessarily mean that one game is harder than the other.

Pokemon is suitable for ages 3+. They aren't going to make the mistake of having one of the starters be completely useless for the first two gyms again. The games weren't challenging, they were broken. Really, what game doesn't go easy on the player for the first few battles?

Single player games don't need to be fair to the player. Players can handicap themselves to make things more interesting and it gives the game more replayability since you can take alternate routes and see how you do. I don't see what pokemon being created for younger kids has to do with it. The people that would benefit the most from unbalanced play is little kids who can formulate their own strategies or just tough it out with an ineffective pokemon and actually learn and grow as human beings. The press x to win, constant reward, no bad feelings mentality is dull and isn't helping anyone.
