So let's imagine through some marvellous Nintendo magic, the Game Boy colour and Game Boy advanced had enough compatibility to let GameFreak have a way to transfer your Pokemon from Gold/Silver/Crystal to Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald. Disregarding any effect that would have on the timeline or any other picky bullshit, would Gen 3 have recieved as much hate as it did?

Was I annoyed that I couldn't trade my bros from Silver? Of course (luckily FireRed and Colosseum softened the blow a little), but I still had them- in fact, my Silver cartridge only finally bit the dust last year, so I had a little over a decade where I could fire up the ol' N64 and load them into Stadium 2 whenever I wanted.

If X and Y turns out to be completely and utterly incompatible as well, with no chance of a 3DS app to bridge the gap, I'll be pissed, but I'm not gonna not play it just because of that.
