Kalos looks way more generic. Since it's based on France (and if you watch the trailers) it'll be ovious that Kalos has a west/middle european climate. Deserts don't exist in those parts.
The desert on the map also looks like smacked down just beause they wanted more variety. It looks like a yellow blot.

Only light clouds (aka clouds with little water) are high enough to cross mountains. But then, they are not able to rain on the other side, so this side stays dry.
