We had a run-in with the firefighter department in New York who were upset with the blatant use of Fire types in the games. They felt that Fire-types in the games were encouraging kids to grow up to become arsonists.

In 2002 we came to an agreement that we could continue the usage of the Fire type, but only if we sent a subliminal message in the game. Thus, ever since Ruby and Sapphire, the fire type starter has always has a dual fighting type, giving so far three FireFighting types.

So far things are going fine and we have no reason to change. The scoop of the century will be Literally, every Fire starter's fighting type evolution for every generation in the next century. Be prepared for a whopper.

Oddly enough, before gen v, gen iv let you catch a fire type the earliest of any game. In normal play throughs you don't find wild fire types until after the third badge in i-iii but in Sinnoh you can find one before the second gym (or the first in Platinum)

It was changed to Dark type for two reasons:

One, Evil would make the kids evil. You can see a consistency here with how our games influence children.

And it was made specifically to be the Dark type to make kids fear the dark less. Now don't look behind you.
