Damn, it's almost like they know it's a grindfest getting good and varied Pokémon, but will refuse to fix it, instead spamming "TRADE, TRADE, TRADE".

As player: if I'm going to be with my friends, I won't play a singleplayer game, but instead a multiplayer one (specially collaborative ones). And I personally don't see the fun in playing with random people that I don't even know, most of them WON'T know even English and they surely WON'T know my native lang.

As design enthusiast: usually, KISS principle applies. I personally don't see P+P trading as a core mechanic, but if GF does, they should improve and "polish" it, not just add random features.

So, giving a low hanging fruit example: GF likes to release a bunch of versions for the same game, right? What about using the bazillion of critters we have now and making all of them different in each version? It incentives trades, make a broader gaming experience (each game will be different), and yet you aren't adding random new features.

All my trades are self-trades... Even in elementary school, when Pokémon was at the height of its popularity, I never knew anyone else who played. Nor did I have a Game Link Cable back then anyway. Now, when the Game Link Cable is long obsolete in favor of built-in wireless trading systems, I know nobody who plays Pokémon. At least now I'm lucky enough to have both a DS Lite and a 3DS so that I could trade back and forth in Gen5, but it wasn't like that for me when I played Platinum, and it's certainly not like that for the kids playing Pokémon now, especially in this economy.

For Nintendo to keep releasing Pokémon games not only in their home nation of Japan but in Western markets as well, they must be selling well among the target audience, which I'm pretty sure is still something like ages 6-12. Just because many kids have developed utterly terrible taste in games doesn't mean that good games (from an established series at least) aren't making someone money.
