Blue was your rival who constantly strived to be one step ahead of you, losing all the time by you, but still having more badges, more Pokemon, and being a better trainer in general. Meeting Blue in the Champion room after Lance was a given because again, he was always one step ahead of you.
Lance was the Champion that saved you from being horded by Team Rocket and being killed by a Shiny Gyarados. He constantly came to help like a damn Superhero and would always be there to show you up.
Steven was this rich friend who was the son of the man who came up with idea of PokeBalls. He would appear and team up with you against both of the evil teams and teach you a few things in between. He was an incredibly cool trainer, and character in general, so cool that he actually gave you a fucking Beldum as a present for beating him that would later become a massive tank like Metagross. Plus, after Wallace took over, he took the Red route and went to go do research and collect meteors in Meteor Falls, and if you found him deep within, he would pull a team that would make you piss your fucking pants.
And Oh god if you don't think Cynthia had build-up then you need to kill yourself.
