Sheesh, who new making something shiny and circular could cause such commotion and hatred. I mean, the thing does it's job and is easy to read right? If it does that, everything else after it is just subjective and doesn't really matter. Someone could hate the color red a whole lot, does that mean it should be used at all in this interface? It's the same thing with complaining about how round or whatever it is or isn't. You may not like it, but that doesn't exactly make it a fault if it performs its intended purpose.

It's really the antithesis of ugly. It's simple, elegant, and refreshing. It doesn't have to look like something out of DDR to be interesting. It's a battle menu. It should be simple and free of distracting clutter. You should be paying attention to the top screen, anyway. It's not the battle menu's job to mesmerize you and hold your attention like a Baby Einstein video.
