The whole point from gen 1 to gen 2 was you're fighting the very character you built up in R/B/Y. They were going to stop the series after gen 2 but kept going because of popularity.

That's the FUCKING POINT Idiots. Red is the avatar of the players of R/G/B/Y. He was to represent the players of the first Pokemon games and is a tribute to them.

The problem with Red is that all he's going for was levels. His team had terrible moveset and typing spread. HG/SS made it even worse by removing his Dark type to yet another Water type (Wate/Ice - bam, more weaknesses).

Except it's less about baiting the fanboys and more of letting out personal hatred for the character (whether it is due to the fanboys or not is irrelevant).
It's clear as day what's going on here in Red threads. Especially on /vp/ when there's an abundance on anti-Gen 1/2 sentiments.
