Hey, noob here. I'm playing the first-generation Pokemon Red. Contemplating which starter to use and I was wondering what type pokemon are the best all-around? I wanna build a team that can be at least decent against anything

Dang, that was fast. Any particular reason besides that it can easily take on Brock? In the past I've always been told to do Charmander, but I dunno why.

Squirtle is the worst starter. Charizard is probably the best, just because it has weaker competition for its roles.

Psychic and normal types are all-around best in RBY. Something like:

>Alakazam
>Exeggutor
>Starmie/Lapras
>Tauros/Snorlax
>Starter
>Zapdos/Rhydon (depends if you want a normal resist or a flier/electric)

is probably the best team you can use.

Do you have any argument for choosing Bulbasaur in particular? If anything, does it really matter which starter to take because there's stronger pokemon in the fire, water and grass types?

I tend to stick to water types through most of the gens, but Blastoise becomes a great defensive tank later on. And the flying type will be for your rival, since he'll choose bulbasaur

It has the best early-game match-ups and learns Sleep Powder to deal with everything else. It's also immune to Poison which provides great peace of mind in Viridian Forest

Bulbasaur is best saur.
Destroy the first 5 gyms of the game without even trying. By then, you'll have good enough Pokemon to take on the rest of the game. On top of that, Venusaur continues to kick ass even against E4 and Blue.

Bulbasaur has Sleep Powder late-game, and a great STAB in Razor Leaf which is effectively 110 power in RBY. It really only gets fucked up by Agatha and Lance's Dragonite. Sabrina is probably Vensaur's biggest obstacle in the game, so you will need back up there, unfortunately

Charmander is okay if you're looking for a challenge (in which case I recommend using a Butterfree to spam Confusion at Brock's gym), but I usually prefer Squirtle. It's got good defenses and a versatile movepool. If you like being a sneaky bastard, though, you can't go wrong with Venusaur's Leech Seed/Toxic combo.

On my last file, I realized picking Squirtle is perfect for a solo run, especially if you use the Teleport glitch in Cerulean City to get yourself a Mew for an HM slave. Teach the little turtley fucker Earthquake and Body Slam and proceed to rape everything.

OP here, so I've decided to eliminate Charmander, so now I'm still up in the air between squirtle and bulbasaur. Apparently bulbasaur kicks some ass, but is useless at one crucial point later on. How does Squirtle work for end-game?

bulbasaur is overpowered because of how razor leaf works. In game gen 1 bulbasaur has swords dance, sleep powder, earthquake, razor leaf and rapes all.

Starmie gains psychic type later on, which makes it great (STAB psychic moves that dominate with high special)
Lapras is really tanky and gets STAB blizzard.
I recommend using Bulbasaur for immunity to poison, and really high special stat (because lel no split), plus access to plenty of status moves. And I think it's better than most grass types you can catch in Kanto.
