Ugh, I'm sick of gen II, and I can't bring myself to play anything before gen IV anymore due to a recent crystal run, where all of hitmonchan's moves where coming off of it's shitty special attack due to no phys/spec split.
So I would rate it: V>IV>III>II>I
I know people will call me a faggot, but, they have steadily improved.

Based purely on Pokemon designs? For me it would be III > I = V > IV > II. Gameplay wise each gen has been better than the last.

Gen V has the most polished mechanics over all, meaning it's the best.
Gen IV has phys/spec split, making it better than the first three
Gen III has double battles, and abilities, making it better than gen I and II
Gen II isn't riddled with bugs.

Stars represent pokemon with the highest potential to be on my first playthrough team, besides Yvetal (spelt that wrong) which is just the best designed legend so far.
Green checks represent quality designs and/or with potential to be on later teams or even my #1 team with good evolutions/types/stats.
Red X represents lack of any chance of being on any of my teams in the future and possibly poor design but not necessarily.

Been playing since Red as a kid and those games have just been done to death to me. I still love them for what they are and what they gave us, but not even nostalgia can win them over for me above the others.
