There's a few things you have to keep in mind in order to make a pokemon look "legit" but it's not hard at all. If you're good at it then you can have a pokemon finished and onto you r game in less than 5 minutes.

learning pokegen is mainly trial and error, what I did to learn was create a pokemon, then upload to pokecheck and read a guide on how to fix the illegality issues

sorry for forgetting to put this in my other post, but another good tip for creating PIDs is saving the pokegen .pkm as a party file, opening it in pokesav and create a PID in pokesav as it allows for almost any PID to exist (sometimes pokegen can't create a shiny, 31/0/31/31/31/31 spread and things of the sort, but pokesav usually never messes up with PIDs)
