We've always had different ways of evolution, and we've had form changes since Gen 3, with Gen 4 and 5 taking up the largest amount of form changing Pokemon.

Huge Power Mawile isn't close to overpowered. It's stats are horrendous, so even if it gets a better typing and a ridiculous attack stat it's still easily knocked out by the many faster pokemon that can one shot it.
Adaptability Close Combat, Vaccuum Wave and Aura Sphere on Lucario would probably make it's usage sky rocket or even make it Uber.

Mawile has Sucker Punch, but other than that, it wont be doing much but wallbreaking in OU. Now, it gets an instant promotion to RU if not to UU, and we don't even know how good Steel/Fairy is, but huge attack alone doesn't make it OP. If it did, Medicham would be OP as well, but it could barely be called good

I'm loving the concept of mega forms. It's a good way to take existing pokemon who were not any good competitively (mawile, absol and ampharos being three shining examples) and giving them a fighting chance. It may seem a bit overkill on Blaziken and Lucario, But honestly in B/W Lucario lost his niche competitively when he was outclassed by many new sweepers, and Blaziken is only any good with speed boost, which i what his mega form is getting as well.

The reason it's temporary is so that you can't make the pokemon hold another item as well, but it seems clear to me that it's not going to be like a gem thing where it gets used up in the battle, it seems to me like an item that they have to be holding in order for them to megaevolve, but then if you need it to hold something else then you have to swap the items and it just won't megaevolve when holding other items.
It doesn't even make sense that pokemon could only megaevolve for one battle.

I really want to embrace mega evolution, and I really like the concept, however it makes me sad that we're probably not gonna get legit, permanent evolutions for some of the pokemon that needed them. Just the name: "Mega Evolutions" sounds like something a 10 year old would stroke his dick to while opening a new pack of yu-gi-oh cards. As popular as it may be, competitive battling isn't the only aspect of Pokemon, and if Game Freak keeps going in this direction, we're gonna end up with 5 new pokemon and 300 new forms and fissions every generation. Face it, this is completely unnecessary and it's time for Game Freak to just stop and build on the mechanics that have made Pokemon what it is rather than adding aspects from every run-of the-mill monster duel knock off that lacks originality the same way kristen stewart lacks acting talent

See, the mega formes are probably a bit different than what an evo would be. They'd most likely need to change the appearance more, not just change Mawile's colour to pink and give it an extra flytrap. In other words, Mawile and Absol wouldn't have had shit if not for the mega formes, and neither would other Pokemon that may not have been announced.
Don't get me wrong, I see the argument that they should've left Mawile and Absol alone. I'm just explaining why they might've done it.

Just like Muk/Grimer like to hold "Sludge" or Dusclops evolves when traded with "Reaper Cloth", so there will be specific items that allow these mega evolutions.
Clearly, Blaziken's item is a special event item. I suspect the other stones will be available throughout Kalos normally. I would hazard a guess that maybe another two or three will be event-specific and released over the course of X and Y's first year or two, but that the rest will generally be available through normal gameplay. Perhaps some will be findable items, like Heatran's Magma Stone; others will likely be buyable at department stores or by a special NPC. Maybe, like the Pan trio selection, you'll be given a selection to choose from at some point. Whatever it is, I'm guessing there will be a variety of ways to acquire them.
Depending on what the mega stones afford the pokemon who use them, I may or may not bother with them. I love Lucario, but his mega evolution sucks. They should've at least made the tail blue or black. It's just a lot of clash. Mega Mewtwo looks okay, I s'pose.

The theme is DNA resembled by the double helix image. Lucario has Reshirams tail, Ampharos has hair, Blaziken has flames. Mawile seems to have Zekroms motif. These mega-evolutions will be based around legendaries most likely. Also Blaziken is going places with Speed Boost and new form.

Take out specific threats, weaken the foes team, and set up all for the sake of sending in Lucario, going Mega, and sweeping the entire foe's team.
Or, alternatively, in the case of that hypothetical MegaMetagross (or any overly bulky Mega, really), use it as a sort of castle. Use it's ridiculous defenses to be a constant block that the foe can't get past, while your non-mega sweepers and tanks take turns dealing damage.
I get the feeling that's where the metagame may end up. It already has a taste of that as is.

I think what is happening with mega stones is that humans are trying to manipulate evolution in pokemon to make them stronger through genetics. Kind of like at the lake of rage where forcing magikarp to evolve turned it shiny. So if that is happening, then science guys found a way to humanely do it to already evolved pokemon or pokemon with no known evolution. That's why it is only temporary, artificial evolution can't be as permanent as natural evolution.
