Well now if an edgy Pokemon designer comes up with a 'mon that's way overdesigned, they can just shift it into the optional MEGA form instead of an official evolution.
Fans of both older simpler designed poke's and knewer spikes'R'us Pokemon alike can now play in the same water park, just in different pools.
This also extends the life of the franchise. Now we can look forward to both official evolutions, and the occasional MEGA form to boost older beloved poke's, and new ones as well. Toss in a few new fairies too.
It just works. Plus, at the end of the day, I think we can all agree, it's better than babby Pokemon.
