I thought about this as well when I saw the Mega Evolutions. Colress had been searching for a way to draw out all the strength of a Pokemon, in thus he creates/finds the Mega stones which do so.
I really hope this is GF plan I like it when they give nods to older games. They also need to have Hilda/Hilbert appear since they did leave Unova to find N
