I think an important thing to consider, generally, is that pokemon have a lot of different selling points. Pokemon may be well-designed, they may give you an emotional response like nostalgia, or they may have high stats. It's important to realize that a lot of people will value one facet of a pokemon over another. Someone may love Farfetch'd because of nostalgia, or because goddammit you took CH'DING into the elite 4 and he struck the last blow to Dicks, goddammit. However, to someone that values the numbers over the aesthetics and finds the actual play of competitive pokemon fun, this might seem ridiculous, because you can never actually USE a farfetch'd outside of the main game in the competitive sphere, where the game actually shines for that person.
On the other hand, someone may love Garchomp to bits because he's so strong and fast, and another guy may think he's retarded because he doesn't believe Garchomp is well-designed or lovable. He doesn't understand why the competitive player loves Garchomp because he doesn't value the numbers game as much.
tl;dr: EVERYONE is a Karenfag because everyone uses their favorites. Each person just uses a different criteria to choose favorites.
