Rhyperior is alright design wise, especially since before we had the complete badassery known as Rhydon. Love everything else about it, such as movepool, stats, ability, etc.

Rhyperior is a piece of shit because it completely abandons the original design of the evolution chain in favor of a flashier color palette that catches the eye as a 4th gen-introduced 1st gen evolution. Scyther does not suffer these flaws.

I feel like Rhyperior was kind of unnecessary. He's cool, but I wish he wasn't Rhyhorn's evolved form. I'd rather they made him a new pokemon, all on his own.

Scyther is a total bro. I love Scizor, but I wish he wasn't Scyther's evo, 'cause the nine-year-old in me still feels like Scyther looks cooler and should therefore be on top.

To me, Scizor isn't an evolution. It has the exact same BST, just moved around for higher attack/defense and lower speed.

It's more of a counterpart. Gamefreak should create an item called 'Solvent Spray' or something, to dissolve the 'Metal Coat' and make Scizor turn back into a Scyther.

I think it would fit quite well amongst all this 'Alternate Form' and 'Mega Evolution' that we're getting these days.

Actually his post just made me check out the shiny version of Rhyperior, and it does have yellow squares. It's body is also grey, and looks way better than the normal version.

Not sure if he's actually colorblind, or just in denial.

It literally seems like some Nintendo execs said "Alright, we're gonna introduce some new evolutions to first gen pokemon. Lets take Rhydon (which really didn't need an evolution) and make it bigger and stupider looking. Also lets call it Rhy-PERIOR, because, you know, we have to make sure they understand its stronger. Because fuck Rhydon, right?

Its just full of design flaws.

What bugs me the most about Rhyperior is the arbitrary belt made of rocks. That's about it.

I do like Scyther, liked it even more as a kid. I had just found out about praying mantises a little while before Pokemon came out, I kept one in a little cage for a while, it died, then Scyhter became the most awesome thing ever to me when I first stumbled across one in the safari zone. Didn't even know he existed.

Anyway I think Rhyperior would have been much better if the plates made more sense. I don't get why they are orange nor like the color orange used like this, and most of them are placed in stupid places. Nothing else wrong with him.

I love both. Scyther is a well-designed Pokemon with decent-enough stats. I love Rhyperior's design, his purpose of bringing an old Pokemon a new lease on life/ability/movepool, and the fact that he allows Rhydon to use Eviolite. If Rhyperior was a Mega Evolution, I would probably hate him because only one of those advantages would remain, yet he would take up game space and be unable to hold any other item.

As for Rhyperior... I'm still not entirely sure what bugs me the most about Rhyperior, but the build of his armour (and its colouring, even if justified) may be what makes me dislike the design the most.

While the "belt" makes sense in terms of protective design, I honestly feel it clutters Rhyperior's looks with how it was done. The shape and colouring of the belt's bits feels awkward compared to the top, crotch and knee rock pads.

Something about the tail also feels odd to me, but I still find it functional design-wise.

Pic related: It's far from perfect, but I tried to think of different ways to make the design work. I think using a head so similar to Rhydon's is probably not the best choice, but I did that to see how it would feel with removing the armour over its eye.

Doesn't the term "edgy" have a specific connotation, the one of thinking "something was made to look excessively cool/badass but in a bad way"? That's a subjective claim. The presence of a colour is objective. That doesn't really work.
