I'm a Smogon player who makes the most of his favourites, and I can tell you that the meta is most fun in the cross gen transition due to nobody knowing what the objectively most viable pokes are in the new gen.

4 of the Pokemon with mega are Pokemon that are considerably under-powered

1 is a mascot legendary for the mechanic

2 are the demographic snagging "cool" Pokemon that will surely appeal to a wide audience

Megas are going to be the saving grace that rescues our completely over-centralized metagame.

As long as some megas are defensive it'll open up new avenues for strategy.

This may be the new golden age of Pokemon.
