The swarm of Smogonites running around screaming about no items fox only final destination being the only way to play is a myth. Fighting games give you super/ultra meter for getting hit and the gain is minimal (aside from the ultra gain). This is with the understanding that fucking up once should not be the end of an entire round in a fighting game.
If you fuck up once in Pokemon as well, there is plenty of possibility to come back using your skill.

If you get stuck in the corner at 10 seconds in and comboed 5 times in a row you shouldn't be given a free deus ex machina super to give you a fighting chance because you got overwhelmed and essentially lost the match at 30 seconds.

Same with Pokemon. If you lose 5 of your Pokemon in the first 7 or 8 turns then that's your own damn fault and you shouldn't be given a free pass to dick over your opponent.

The 1 Mega per team thing is a concept already used in MtG with avatars for Vanguard, and it's a game mode that has a huge casual, semi-competitive, and competitive following.

A mechanic along the lines of Mega Pokemon in another turn based game has set precedent for incredible competitive value. Megas could actually become one of the strongest assests and one of the biggest balance points for competitive Pokemon since Stealth Rock. Megas have a higher chance of becoming synonymous with it for being the staple of comp that they love but casuals hate than being flat out banned due to that one change.

People seem to think that any change to the metagame will kill Smogon. In reality, drastic changes to the metagame are what give Smogon most of its power.

This is like when people saw Haxorus and said it would kill Smogon by ruining the metagame. That's something that many, many people were actually saying when the gen 5 base stats were first leaked.

I don't get it. If the Megas are stronger, doesn't that just require a reorganisation of the Tiers and where pokemon stand in those tiers?

I assume moves like Switcheroo, Knock Off, Covet and Thief (if item stealing works) would become highly prized additions to movesets. I assume the abilities Sticky Hold and Frisk would be more useful.

Tiers don't need reorganizations, they just change as time goes on and people have clearer ideas of what's good and what isn't.
Most likely, Mega versions will count as separate Pokemon, so you'd get MMawile in OU and Mawile in RU, for example.

It really changes very little. It might even get the nice bonus of actually creating a strat like this, but for defensive teams. Entire cores that revolve around keeping defensive Megas alive to sponge hits.

This argument reminds me of when Sakurai (creator of Super Smash Bros.) came out and said that he specifically introduced elements into Brawl to keep it as a random, lighthearted party game, as opposed to a competitive fighter. Casual players jizzed their pants, competitive players grumbled, then just went and carved out ways to make a competitive fighter out of the damn thing any way (Brawl+, Project M)

The same shit will happen here, though competitive battlers will have an easier time of making the best of the new mechanics than Smash Bros players did. At the end of the day, I will concede that competitive battlers shouldn't hold their breath, expecting changes in the game with them in mind. Changes are gonna be to attract more 10 year old kids, and anyone wanting to take to Smogon will have to carve a niche out of that. And they will.

tl;dr - OP is a fag; competitive battlers will find a way to have their fun with the new mechanics, and life goes on.

SuperTraining is essentially "My first EV training". You think little Billy gives two shits about which values in Jellicent should be at 255, or especially how to achieve that? Hell no. I wasn't when that happen, I have had work early all these days, so I honestly just check VP, and have been seeing something, and then I go to work. When I come back its chiller.

But to be honest, I don't really play competitevely that much, I am fairly new, and use smogon as a guide. I know that they have changed every single gen, so I don't think there is a reason to panic
