The protagonist is supposed to be a blank slate that players can project their own personalities onto. Having the player character never speak in any way that gives an indication of a personality helps with that.

Silent protagonist is superior to all other options because of Pokemon's "ten year old goes on an adventure and competes with other ten year olds" theme. Sure its cliche but having them talk doesn't work. It makes each player the same person ruining the social aspect of it.

I liked the idea until I put some further thought into it.

First of, every single narrator that has been in a Pokémon game so far has been absolutely horrible.
Don't even try to proof me otherwise, rethink of a few, compare them to other games and you'll see what I mean

Secondly, Pokémon has probably the most stupid and childish dialogue ever.
It makes the whole thing even more annoying if you have to listen to it instead of just pressing A for a thousand times.
