"Rival" probably refers to the characters who get the other starters, and in case you didn't notice, there are only two.

This is just a theory, but if Patrice is Sycamore's assistant, it makes sense the leaker assumed he was the main professor since you meet him at the start of the game and don't meet Sycamore until later.
