DS/DSi carts have no way of communicating with 3DS carts. Literally no chance.

DS/DSi may be able to communicate with the 3DS in general however, but not the other way around. So that whole 'download play' trick won't work.

The only way would be to have the Wii U as a middle man. Looks like we're screwed.

I think that considering they have announced the shiny Dialga, Palkia and Girantina events for BW2 so close to the X and Y release it pretty much confirms some sort of backwards compatibility.

But couldn't they just have an intermediary ala the GTS or Global Link? Just put an app on the eShop that interacts/pulls data from your DS cart and uploads it to your Global Link account. After linking to it with your X/Y copy you can download them like you do Pokemon you get from the Dream World.
I see no reason why transferring to Gen VI couldn't work.

They could make some free storage app on the eShop that would allow you to store your Gen IV/V Pokemon in some sort of "cloud". Then you could just transfer them from the cloud to X/Y.

They're just trying to ease you into the new games which is why we haven't heard anything about it.

I kind of expect them to launch an app on the same day for it. I'd imagine to keep it quiet, they'll have a code with the games that you put in the eshop to download for free.

They've acknowledged the incompatibility of the cartridges, and said they have a plan they're working on to get around it. They have not said it was impossible to do at all and they gave up so I have no idea where these naysayers are coming from.

"Working on it" is a pretty stupid thing for them to say.
It wouldn't take much work at all for them to do it.

They're just using the phrase "working on it" to cover up the fact that they still haven't decided whether or not they're going to allow it.

The switch to Gen 6 is their first chance to eliminate hacked pokemon.
It's too good of an opportunity for them to pass up.

They did not say they were working on transferring. They said they were working on a SOLUTION. This could mean having several Pokemon available in XY, maybe as DLC, and possibly remakes to cover the rest.

I'm pretty sure that we won't be able to transfer previous Gen Pokémon to Gen VI. But that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Think about it, after the whole Ruby/Sapphire thing prevented us getting our Gen I and Gen II bros into Gen III, we got remakes of Gen I, so that we could get any older Pokémon not indigenous to Hoenn. While we may get som older Pokémon in Kalos, we won't be able to catch every single one of them in this Gen.

Who knows? We may be getting our Gen III remakes in 2014...

I'll be honest- a Wii U application for Pokemon storage would be fucking fantastic.

Pokemon Ranch was ...a start. But it was godawful; not only with the shitty reused models from Rumble but also not being able to transfer them out to any game and the complete drop in support post DP.

I want a Wii U app that can connect to BW/BW2 and allow me to put the Pokemon on there and then transfer them out to XY. Categorizing them would be awesome too. More like Pokemon Box RS than Ranch.

And hell, let them wander around a big plaza. Call in Pokemon Plaza XY or some shit.

Yeah, let's punish thousands of legitimate players and make them not able to use all their hard earned shinies, good IV'd Pokemon, and EV trained high level Pokemon possibly from over the past 10 years just because of a few hackers who won't lose anything because they made their Pokemon in a few minutes, while all of this can entirely backfire if the 3DS eventually does get hacked. Great idea. The best solution to PokeGen is if they changed IVs and Hidden Power to not be so hacker friendly.

This. The best way to eliminate hacking isn't to try to create an "unhackable" game, it's to remove the hacker's advantage by making so that a hacking or obsessiveness isn't required to make a competitive Pokemon.
