I'm gonna try to explain this as best I can, but no promises. This just now happened. Sorry if it's tl;dr.
So I'm playing Red version, and I start toying with the Mew glitch, where you pause right before a trainer sees you and it tricks the game into thinking there's a battle in progress on that route. I used an Abra's Teleport instead of waiting until I got Fly. I got Mew by beating the guy with the level 17 Slowpoke, as per usual, then I started testing what Pokemon I could get from other trainers. On the S.S. Anne, I fought a Youngster with a level 21 Nidoran Male, and went back to Route 6 to enter the battle, picking up 10 Pokeballs on the way. (I dunno if this influenced anything, I'm just being thorough.) But instead of the pause menu coming up as usual, this time a text box appeared. The text read, "Whisper...whisper..." and a Gastly appeared, and it genuinely gave me chills.
