That's the only way I can see it being justified. A lot of peopel go "Overdesigned piece of trash" but then when a Mega FORM(not an evolution) gets something simple people go "Simplified piece of shit! Why isn't it overdesigned!"

It's not really that different from Mawile's mega. It just got a color change and a second jaw.

Mega Ampharos is cool how it is. So much details would make him look overdesigned because its style is simple. The mega evolved wooless sheep is heavy with the wig, and maybe will be dragon type to be even more heavy. Stop with that attitude.

Ryu = Dragon

Ampharos was always supposed to be a dragon but North American fans didn't know about the original name has dragon in it. It can't get anymore explicit than that.

Denryu means current, as in an electric current. The fact that ryu happens to be in its name is most likely completely incidental, considering the fact that Ampharos is not part dragon, nor does it learn any dragon type moves.

Regardless of the fact that Ampharos wasn't originally a dragon, it's pretty clear they Mega Ampharos is based on the wordplay of Denryu containing the ryu part. It's also probably that denryu, as a word for electric current, is rooted in denji and ryu in the first place.

Or rather electrical current is called denryu because a discharge kinda looks like an eastern dragon.
GameFreak acknowledges this double meaning by making Denryu's Megaform an Electric Dragon.
