Arguably the best team I've ever had on a Heart Gold run: Feraligatr, Heracross, Arcanine, Alakazam. Just those four.

Also, best HM Slave in HGSS: Sandslash for land-based HMs (Cut, Strength, Rock Smash, Rock Climb) and Lanturn for sea-based HM's and Flash (Surf, Whirlpool, Waterfall, Flash). If you want a Fly slave, just slap a Soothe Bell on Togepi once that fucker hatches, get it a haircut at Goldenrod and walk around for about 15 minutes, level it up a few times and bam, Togetic Fly slave.

4 Pokemon is definitely the best way to go, grinding is such a pain in Johto that it's not even worth it to have a full team of 6 because you just wont have enough exp to pass around adequately. It's one of my main pet peeves with HGSS.

Thanks for the slave recommendations. I tried to search for best land-based one day and got Geodude and then I found out it can't learn Cut.

Starter of Choice
Geodude for rock smash + rock climb when you finally get it
Fearow, Dodrio if you're using the pokewalker, or crobat for fly
Quagsire for water + strength
I like vileplume but you can choose some other grass pokemon

Gyarados if you chose Cyndaquil
Magmar if you chose Tododile
