OP, and anyone else in the game, you are doing great. Just pick Pokemon that you like. These games are made so that little kids can beat them, just pick some Pokemon that you enjoy using, while keeping in mind that variety is useful. You're going through the game, not training a competitive team. And if you want to train a competitive team, its much easier AFTER you beat the game, so just focus on enjoying yourself for now.
I played Black, White 2 (japanese) and Black 2 Hard Mode with completely different teams each time, using a mix of arguably "bad" and "good" pokemon each time, and it was super fun.
