Anyone else thought that it was really cool that your rival was the champion in gen I? I've always wanted them to do something like that again.

By the time I got to the champion, my default team was usually manufactured solely for defeating my rival in case I ran into him.
It made the champion battle way to easy IMO.

It's fun when champions are different people because they usually have a good character to them (Wallace, Stephen, Cynthia, Alder, Iris, etc)

This is a fact a lot of genwunners miss.

You beat your rival plenty of times before he becomes Champion. The aura of the champion being the "final struggle" loses its meaning when you know he is that faggot you always kicked.

The first time round it was an unexpected twist, since it seemed like Lance was set up as the final boss.

But even though making your rival the champion again would be repetitive, every game made the champion's reveal less unexpected.

What did Lance, Steven and Cynthia all have in common? They were traveling trainers who helped you out at different points that you didn't battle before the League.

What are your expectations for the X/Y champion?

I loved it. Absolutely loved it.

People complain that Gen 1 didnt have much of a plot. And their mostly right. But if had any plot, it was your rival.

That smug motherfucker was one step ahead of you the entire game. He's easily more powerful than anyone bar yourself. And he took great pride in his victories and simmered at the losses.

Blue Oak, Grand Champion... Until you come along. Until you beat his perfectly balanced team of the most powerful monsters in Kanto. Until his own family picks a mostly mute child over him.

The Champion of Indigo isn't friendly like many are, or even courteous. It truly makes for a unique experience.

His team gets a significant power jump from the last time you fight him,and he's got the best battle theme in the series.

This being the first game a fight after Lance wasn't immediately expected

That's the same with every rival. You beat them countless times. A good setup would be facing him only 3 times. Once when you first get your starter, once in the middle, and the last time as the champ. Also have a pre-elite 4 and postgame team up.

I liked the rival in Gen 1 the most because he was rival-like. He was a douche and antagonized you. Gen 2, that guy was kind of random and inconsequential. Gen 3 and up your "rivals" were friends so that killed the tone.

Nope, if you get to low health your rival actively tries to let you win by spamming Leer/Growl/Tail Whip instead of attacking you.

The only time I've ever lost that first match is if the rival gets a crit at a point unlucky enough to kill you outright.

You can lose to any rival if you lose the first battle. But you can lose twice to Blue if you also lose the Route 22 battle. However, that battle isn't mandatory unless you're playing Yellow and want Gary to have a Jolteon instead of a Flareon.

In X/Y you should get no hint so as to who will be the champion. Then it's revealed to be Giovanni. He rekts your shit if you're not prepared. If you defeat him, you become champion and have to wait in the champion's room for challengers, You're immediately challenged by Red If you defeat him you go to Mt Silver to wait for a worthy challenger. The game ends.

It's a lot more satisfying to beat your rival when he's a jerk. At the very least, do something to incite competition. Maybe he's your friend, but he's super competitive, so he gets butthurt when he loses and he's a jerk about pokemon battles.

Barry could've kicked Cynthia's ass plenty as far we know. I'd even say it was implied, as his team levels up based on how much you do the same thing yourself. Barry isn't the player character like Red used to be, his great achievements don't have to be on screen.
