I don't want to start a genwar here, because I really do love all the games, so please don't 404 this prematurely, mods.
Something odd just struck me. Things like Looney Tunes have been out for decades; did baby boomers ever say things like 'the old Looney Tunes were better, the new ones suck now?' and cry about their childhoods? I know it was kind of a thing with Transformers, but those were more Gen X kids.
Is this phenomenon of hating a long running franchise from your childhood and feeling like you own a franchise and it should never have to change to 'preserve' your childhood a new thing? Is it because we've become more selfish over time?
