The anime. Point blank. It was the main reason anyone got into Pokémon or was drawn into it. The anime had more influence than the games at the time, a LOT more influence. Were it not for that, the games would just be obscure GameBoy RPG's and GameFreak would be out of business.

tl;dr that shitty anime got Pokémon to where it was. And it sucked ass then.
