When you compare cards within sets, no, the current cards aren't inherently better.
They made the numbers bigger. Pokemon do more damage, yes, but they also have a lot more HP.
If you were to replace the numbers in a Haymaker deck with the average numbers we have now, it would win without question.
The game is a lot more balanced now because they've restricted a lot of things.
