Geodude's name was originally a reference to the geoduck, a large saltwater clam considered a delicacy in Japan. This explains why it's able to learn water-type moves in betas of Pokemon Red and Green. Its name was originally mispronounced upon Pokemon's arrival in America and due to a lack of correction it's been in place this entire time.
