But what happens if you like more than one Pokemon? If I like both Tepig and Magby, but only have one spot for a Fire type, I'm either rolling an inbalanced team or alternating between them, which means they're each getting half the EXP/EVs. Just because you box a Mon doesn't mean you can't use them in the post-game, it's just not a good option for the main story.

The only starters I've actually boxed were meganium and serperior. Everything was bad about meganium, design and gameplay wise. No good aspects about it and was a weak link throughout the game.
Serperior had a good design, but playing with him was so fucking boring because of that movepool.

When Infirst got Gold version I picked Chikorita because dinos are cool and I thought Chikorita was pretty cute.

I remember it being very helpful, and being one of three Pokemon I almost got to level 100; it was level 96. My brother restarted my game before I could finish, though.

Coincidentally, I've never had a real issue fighting Whitney or her Miltank.

How is that any different from the Gen II starters? Only Feraligatr has a slightly more diverse movepool but it doesn't change the fact that it's only "good" with Sheer Force. If you can't EV train your Pokemon into something useable on your team, especially a Pokemon as well-rounded as Meganium, you should reconsider being on /vp/.

Most of my favorite pokemon are defensive walls.
One of my favorites is ferrothorn.

Meganium is outclassed by pretty much every other defensive pokemon in johto. It's just shit. It doesn't have a fun defensive playstyle, especially since it barely has the movepool to even function.

Double Screens, statuses and Aromatherapy provide cover for the rest of your team while Meganium's natural bulk means it will survive long enough to fulfill its role while your opponents team falls the fuck apart. Yes, and Serperior can do all that better than Meganium because it's not outpaced by half of the game. In addition it can evo do cool shit with Coil.

Why does gamefreak have such a grudge against grass starters?
The only one that came out well both gameplay-wise and design-wise was torterra. Every other single grass starter either has major gameplay flaws, design flaws or both.
It especially sucks since grass starters always have the best two stages. It's just the third stage that always manages to fuck up somehow.

I picked Chikorita in Crystal, and it's been one of my favorites ever since. No, it's not the most useful Pokemon, it is outclassed by pretty much everything, but that's not what makes it my bro/sis. I just like it.

Well in that case it's no better than any starter Pokemon before Gen IV, if you're not considering the Hidden Ability abominations. But it's still useable if you're not a complete novice to Pokemon.

OP I had the same problem on White 2 boxing Serperior. What you do is, once you box it, pretend it's being transferred to Hugh's little sister who's missing her stolen Purrloin. That way you can rest assured that not only is your starter getting a master capable of loving it more than you ever could, she'll also have a bro to pass the time with until her newly-evolved Liepard is returned to her.
