It's not based on the canon game (Yellow), it's based on Red. Which makes sense, since Yellow is based on the anime, a canon special would just be an alternate version of season one. They need to do something completely non-canon to make the nostalgiafags happy.

HGSS called him Blue pretty clearly, and the only character named Green was the manga version of Leaf from FRLG.

Japan called him Green as the games over there were Red and Green.

The official English translation keeps changing depending upon where he features and whose translating it.

It is far easier just to call him Blue/Green so everyone knows who you mean

If Red shows more pokemon than his Charizard I'll say his team might be:

Charizard (Starter)

Pidgeot/Fearow (If Blue has the other bird)

Raichu/Jolteon (If Red catches a Pikachu he'll evolve it)

Lapras (Red is battling TR at Sliph Co. He gets one there)

Snorlax (PokeFlute scenario)

Not sure about the last slot. It could be a grass type or a ground type, maybe a fossil like Adventure Red's Aerodactyl. I'd like Red to catch a Scyther.

Charizards confirmed and I would say it's safe to believe Snorlax is a BIG possibility. My best bet is Red putting a snorlax on his team for certain.

His other 4, though, I honestly couldn't possibly fathom a guess. Maybe a Butterfree? That would be pretty cool, honestly. Butterfree is one of my favorite gen 1 pokemon.

I would hazard a guess and say his water type will probably be Lapras. That's all I really got.

Butterfree
Snorlax
Lapras

He might use whatever pokemon was exclusive to pokemon Red, Electabuzz, right?

In other words shit like a Mankey against Brock, Diglette or Dugtrio against Lt. Surge, Pidgeot or Fearow against Erika, etc.

Red's not going to have an Espeon-- there aren't going to be any Pokemon beyond the original 151.

He's not going to have a Blastoise and Venusaur unless Green and Oak give them up at the very end.

He's not going to have a Pidgeot. But Green definitely will.

Lapras and Snorlax are a given. Anything else is up for speculation.
