It'll happen. There are no technical reasons why it can't, mechanics aren't different enough to break compatibility and the backlash isn't worth it.

Worst case scenario we create a homebrew server that does it ourselves.

Pokemon, types, movesets, natures etc are all still there. If some backend stuff gets fucked then theres no reason it can't just take the OT, Nickname, moveset, nature and just generate a new Pokemon from it. I'd rather say have approximations of my Pokemon primarily for Pokedex reasons with newly generated IVs and such than just no compatibility.

I mean no GBA games had any compatibility with any GBC games back in the day. Although obviously technology has advanced since then.

Well I don't see why they couldn't. I mean they have the ribbon slide in that status screen picture of torchic they showed, so unless they're bringing ribbons back they're anticipating the old pokemon who could actually earn them coming back

We're in the Wi-Fi age now. I can set up a server that fires any pokemon I want at my DS. There is no technical issue that could possibly prevent it.

Well, events always come with ribbons nowadays. 5th Gen events had ribbons and that was the only way to "earn" them, so yeah

Only they release it a good while after X and Y come out so that we don't just shove all our old Pokemon in there right away.
