Heatran? It has a quad weakness to Ground and is one of the least respected legends, if anyone even wants to call it one. (I would suggest they pay attention to D/P, because Heatran does have a legend to it)

To a lot if us Charizard was the original bro. As I kid I was drawn to charmander because its name was the coolest and despite all the trials that little guy went through in the first two gyms we powered through it.
He was there with me through every step of becoming Pokemon master, he was there with me when we on a hunt for missingno, he was there through the elite four, he was there for mewtwo, and he was there to wreck my friends in post game battles.
He may not be very good in the meta anymore but no le epoch maymay will ever take away that he is one of my favorite Pokemon.

They're both stock fantasy, and it's pretty easy to relate one to the other since most dragons are reptilian and breathe fire. It pretty much depends on the source if they are related or not. Most do make the distinction they are different since dragons often have traits that salamanders don't. (for instance, having more than just fire abilities) Truly, though, I think the real reason Charizard is not a Dragon is for balance. It would've been too unfair to make a starter evolve to one of the most powerful types.
