Back in the day there was like, 3 years between each new gen, now they're coming out every year

gen 5 was a little on the short end, but it came out march 2011, so it was basically 2 and a 1/2 years ago.
Gen 4 was just a particularly long generation, from 2006/2007 to 2011.

Yes because they were obviously burdened with the laborious task of creating new Pokemon for the game all over again. You DO realize that making new pokemon takes time right? and when they don't need to do that the game comes out faster.

So the time from 5th gen to 6th gen is 3 years 5.5 was just filler using all the same Pokemon as before with a different story and new maps, that literally takes little to no work at all for a company as big as game freak. Most development comes from the new designs, choosing their stats, and how they move. I'm amazed they did x and y within the the usual 2 and a half to 3 year time span with the new 3d environments and such.

FRLG, HGSS and BW2 were probably developed by another team. Companies like GF often work on multiple projects at once with multiple teams. They probably have the main team and then the secondary team who put out another game quickly based on the main teams game.

It would make sense, there are improvements made in HGSS that didn't carry forward to BW such as the running shoes toggle. Adds up if you consider that BW was in development right after DPP and HGSS was done by the other team. If they were being done at roughly the same time then its no surprise that BW didn't take a lot of the new stuff in HGSS into account.

I took an english release date there, sorry.
G/S is suppose to be November 21, 1999.

That said, the total length is from the first game to the generation to the day before the release of the first game of the follow generation.
