The models are actually somewhat to scale in the overworld this time, so they might have thought that it would have created awkward clipping issues with surrounding areas.

With Pokemon-amie I don't care about following Pokemon at all to be honest.

Pokémon-Amie seems to be taking its place and it seems to affect battle as well.

Sure, you won't take your Pokémon out on a walk and get different reactions but Gen VI's supposed gimmick will probably the next best thing if you wanna bond with your Pokémon.
