The only reason why weather had appeal had more to do with how weather effects were seamless compared to past Gens so they were easier to appreciate.
Straight line -- eh, Unova was the kind of region where you "admired the forest for the trees" or something. You can see that GameFreak came a long way at least, given town designs and whatnot, plus I'll give them credit for how they wanted to define a Pokémon adventure
I still say that the Gym Leaders helping fight the good fight was a priceless moment Sure, there wasn't much exploring but it was designed in a way where HMs were mostly optional.
It felt like GameFreak wanted to make a Pokémon game as engaging and accessible as possible. Veterans might bitch about how it made things too easy or it was stuck in tutorial mode but you have to understand that they WANTED more people to get the quest done and overwith so they could try battling and trading online.
You'll be surprised how many players have yet to go online either because their team wasn't properly leveled or properly built a competitive moveset. Gen V was meant to invite more kids to the pool.
