Well, it's possible he only battles in the demo, but I doubt it. They had to make a separate animation for him, so they could have just picked someone else. He most likely battle s at some point in-game.

I do thinkk it's weird that they gave him Pokemon that would be more in-line with the villainous teams, regardless of whether he really owns those Pokemon in-game. Pretty much all the bad guys use something in the Crobat line, and Chandelure is a bit sinister in theme, as a Ghost type. Dragonite is pretty neutral, but just a strong Pokemon, I could think it fit.

This post is all stuff that's a stretch, but aspects of Sycamore's design could point to a connection. His collar is nearly identical to the ones on the Team Flare uniforms, and the buttons on both their coats are quite similar. He has their wavy hair.

I saw a theory showing that his socks were the exact same colour in the uniform too, which I thought was stupid, but maybe it's not. His white and blue is the total opposite of their black and orange. One might suggest that he's designed to look the opposite of them via colour, to put out the image that he's as distant as possible from Team Flare. But then you see a bit of orange underneath, indicating his real allegiance.
