I don't think they need to get rid of IVs. They just need a way to streamline the process.
Let's walk through the process for making a competitively viable pokemon, shall we?
First, you need to go out and catch a pokemon with the nature that you want. This is going to take a long time, and a lot of trial and error.
THEN, you need to catch a pokemon with the IVs that you want.
This is, also, going to take a lot of time and trial and error.
Then, you breed the two pokemon together, until you get the pokemon you want, with the IVs that you want, and the nature that you want.
The chances of this actually happen are basically nil, so this will take a long time.
Fortunately, there are some items you can use to speed the process along, a little bit.
These items, themselves, require a lot of time and effort to obtain.
Then, once you have the pokemon you want, you then fight a specific number of specific pokemon to raise specific stats as high as they'll go. Then you grind it to 100.
And that's not even counting egg moves, or whatever arbitrary effect Pokemonamie will have.
And then you repeat that process, from the beginning, 5 more times.
And that's all just to play the game competitively.
You know what you do to play competitively at Street Fighter or DOTA or Starcraft? Turn on the game. Start playing. That's it.
It's boring, it's repetitive, it's arbitrarily restrictive, it's just not fun.
Some way to mitigate the process is long overdue.
