So /vp/ I got an apartment with a buddy of mine recently and was setting up my room where i had a set of shelves. On one of the shelves I put up all of my pokemon games, (red, gold, silver, ruby, sapphire, emerald, pearl, diamond, platinum, heartgold, black and white 2 for those of you who are curious) when my roomates friend comes in and goes "Holy shit, I love pokemon!" Now, don't worry. At first I was skeptical. I asked him which game he had played last and he did say pokemon black, so it was off to a good start. Then things took a turn for the casul. I asked him how excited he was gen 6. He gave me a look of somewhat confusion and quickly said he was busy, couldn't keep up with everything. Understandable. Then I asked him what he thought of fairy type. He didn't even know that had fucking happened. But that's okay, I told myself, he just hasn't kept up with news. So then he told me he could kick my ass in a battle, I laughed and said "Sure, which tier do you want to battle in?". He went silent. His face looked puzzled. I realized my mistake a second too late. He had no idea what I was talking about and asked "Tiers?". Fuck me, /vp/. I hate how every person i meet in real life who "loves" pokemon doesn't know fuck all about it. Anyone else have similar stories and experiences?

Loving pokemon doesn't mean you have to know every little thing. He loves to play the games, he just doesn't have competitive battling experience and he hasn't been keeping up with news on the recent games.

not keeping up with bullshit "tiers" that don't mean anything and only caring about casually playing the games and actually TRAINING pokemon(instead of just playing on the computer and picking any pokemon you want) is not the same thing as "not knowing fuck all about it"

>>13523899 So you're mad cause he doesn't play competitively like you do?
I fucking hate people like you, you're just like the Facebook Genwunner, you try to take all of the fans who don't play the game the way you like and call them "not true fans"
At least still he plays the games.
If anything be mad that he doesn't keep up with the news.

>>13524305 i'm mad he doesn't know fuck all about the series he claims to be a big fan of. he didn't even know the names of at least 200 of the pokemon or their evolutions. that isn't being a big fan.

You don't get to determine what constitutes being a 'big fan'.

American football barely exists outside of the competitive, televised circuit, unlees you count fans of high school football, whereas Pokemon is an entire world of gameplay that, until recently, didn't really acknowledge that there was a level of play outside of the game itself.
A person who has played every game all the way through, has used all or most of the starters, and can name most pokemon if shown a picture is a big fan in my opinion, but even that much will be disagreeable to a lot of people.

On an unrelated note, how do people deal with EVs in-game? Whenever I play, my OCD just flares up and I have to get the perfect fucking 252 in two stats, but not only does it add an extra layer of grind on the game, it's also counter-intuitive since for example the ones your pokemon is effective against usually give you the opposite of what you want. So how do people deal with this crap? Do you guys just not care because it's singleplayer or do you sit there grinding two hundred or so critters until they don't even give XP anymore?
