They still keep doing this shit, making about half of a species useless because the secondary ability is shit. Unless this nigga gets something like Coil or Quiver Dance, Suction Cups will just be garbage compared to Contrary. I'm willing to bet that the hidden ability is Illuminate, just to rub it in some more.

Considering his stat switching attack and how it can be used on your partner in a double battle, being able to keep him in with suction caps could be useful. It's not like anyone really uses stat lowering moves on opponents anyway so without some close combat-esque move on Malamar contrary wouldn't be that great.

Suction Cups is better than Contrary. Nobody uses stat lowering moves, but everyone uses Roar.

I don't know, even if you don't have any good moves to abuse Contrary with, turning around the random procs from Earth Power and others seems useful to me. It'd be better on a physical attacker, though, since you could benefit from Intimidate. Malamar's probably special.

Suction Cups is actually better than Contrary, considering Malamar probably doesn't have moves to abuse Contrary (Psycho Boost is Deoxys SIgnature move anyway)

Well if Malamar is physical, sure, it would be nice converting those Intimidates to a +1 boost, but he'll probably go down the special route and thus Suction Cups will be more useful

We know roughly 3 moves from Malamar's movepool. And very, very little about it's stats. Meaning GF could come up with a bunch of new moves that are perfect with contrary and give them all to Malamar. Too early to be sure.

Malamar in going to be a supporter anyway.
It just needs skills swap or something like that and it would become the best Slaking/Regigigas supporter, countaing that skill swap is a possibility for this guy since his gimmick in about flips and shit.

We saw it got its shit kicked in my Marowak with Bonemerang. It also attacked right after Noivern, who seems like a super fast Pokemon. So maybe Malamar has lackluster defense but is actually a mixed attacker.

Imagine contrary on a fast Pokemon using close combat, one or two attacks later and that Pokemon would have build up some serious bulk.

If it's actually just special, I hope they add a special version of either super power or close combat.

well that's disappointing. Never have used a pokemon with it, the descriptions I've read of Contrary doesn't specify that Contrary only affects the pokemon with said ability as opposed to any pokemon in battle with that pokemon as well.

I suppose as it is the pokemon's ability alone it makes sense, but still vague. Now I want a move that swaps status effects inflicted by anyone in a battle for x turns, akin to Trick Room

Don't jump to conclusions. Maybe they're going to give more distribution to moves that force the opponent to switch. If he's got lots of stat boosting attacks and debuffs he could be a great asset in multi-battles.

Contrary is for your own stats. However, Malamar gets a move called Turn Over, that reverses the stat gains/losses of another pokemon on the field.
