I think it was excusable with Johto because most old carts no longer function properly and also HGSS was a legitimately great game by its own merits, not just as a remake.

But I am in the same camp for the most part, I'm hoping Hoenn doesn't get remade.

But it's not an old game, so much as changed. (GTS, fairies, triple battles, rustling grass, rotation battles, resuable TMs, day and night, physical/special split, not to mention new evos like Gallade, Dusknoir, Froslass)

I can't figure you out /vp/, someone yesterday scolded me for preferring RBY to FR/LG

GBA games have save batteries too. They didn't use flash saves for cartridges until the DS.

The batteries worked differently though and are less likely to impact the save file. In GSC the clock battery was also linked to the save battery so when the clock stopped working you lost your save. In RSE the clock battery was separate so when the clock stops the save file remains.

Because they throw resources into remaking an old game. Yea I loved red/blue but I do not want to play it again and they wasted time making a remake that I never touched. I just wanna see new games with a new story. R/B pales in comparison to recent games in terms of game play (not design imo) even though it blew my mind when I was a kid. But seriously I played it so many times a remake is just bleh. I can say the same for Gen 2 and Gen 3.

HG/SS is when some people who quit Pokemon around Gen 2 or 3 came back to the franchise, but others waited until Gen 5's release to start with a fresh game and the all new Pokemon, fresh adventure feel was a turn on for lots, so it makes sense that the numbers just expanded in that demographic after people enjoyed HG/SS and went on to play BW and drag more of their friends back in.

Actually, the GBA games do use flash memory for the save file, with a battery that only powers the clock (since it has to keep running when the console is off). IIRC setting the wrong flash memory size in an emulator can sometimes keep the game from booting.

It actually started with D/P/Pt's global trade system making the competitive scene such a bigger deal than ever before. It probably doesn't show in the chart though, because those people didn't buy the game at release. It was a gradual movement that people all through Gen 4 started hopping back into Pokemon, bringing their games to college, etc. Gen 5 was the reboot at the peak of this movement to fully capitalize on this event, and by the looks of those charts it worked. Expect to see the demographic grow even more in Gen 6. Some people actually were holding out for better graphics and new types. A couple of my friends who wouldn't be convinced to play Gen 5 have told me they're buying XY on release day.

I don't think it had anything to do with competitive battling. It was all about being able to trade with people around the world and bringing your pokemon from r/s to the new gen.
